We've got a variety of innovative projects, all of which are aimed at enhancing the urban quality of life in Indianapolis. Salvaged materials are upcycled into a range of products and urban installations, while development initiatives are aimed at bringing new programs and ideas to Indianapolis. Projects meet 2 of 3 areas of our mission in advancing 1) connectivity, 2) environmental responsibility and 3) good design.

Old City Hall Temporary Reuse

NEED: A new office space for DMD's long-range planning department.

IDEA: Design and retrofit the historic building using found and repurposed materials. Create an urban planning hub for Indianapolis that educates and connects the public to the future of the city.

SCOPE: In January 2014, the Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD) will temporarily move its long-range planning offices into the first floor of Old City Hall, turning the 103 year old classical limestone building into a CITY PLANNING HUB for Indianapolis. PUP has been engaged by Adam Thies, Director of DMD, to develop and manage a plan for this reuse. The GOAL of this project is to create an inclusive and open space for the public to learn about and contribute to the future plans of Indianapolis.

The Dome Bag Project.

Date: 2008-2010

Impact: PUP worked with 7 local designers to make 1000 wallets, clutches, and messenger bags from the RCA Dome roof fabric.

From the sale of these bags, we raised over $35,000 for the design and fabrication of public shade structures (also made from the fabric). The first of these shade structures is scheduled for installation in the spring of 2011.

RCA Dome Salvage.

Date: FALL 2008

Impact: PUP diverted 13 acres (nearly 90%) of RCA/Hoosier Dome roof fabric from a local landfill. In order to accomplish this, we worked with Sabre Demolition, the Indianapolis Parks Department, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, and SEND.

These 13 acres would have only cost $15,000 to dispose of in an Indianapolis landfill. Through our Dome Products and Shade Structure projects we work to give new life to this incredible resourse.
